Ok, so I’m going to reference my tips based on stories but really these tips can be applied to any writing. You can’t have a story, or any piece of writing, without an idea. That’s what it is basically, a fleshed out idea. But how do you get the idea in the first place? The most obvious answer is from your brain. From the random thoughts you get as you fall asleep, or from your deep thinking in the shower.
However, sometimes that isn’t enough. Sometimes you can think of a great character or a scene you really want to use, but what about the setting, the plot, the conflict? There are many different resources to help with that. The internet is a great one. Look up story prompts on google, or sentences starters. Look up pictures of people and base a story off of the first one that catches your eye. Don’t get frustrated if you can’t find one that interests you. Just keep looking, and you will find the perfect thing for you.
Other than the internet, there are lots of other ways to get ideas for your story. Take a nature walk, and incorporate something you see into your story. I find talking to my friends about my writing always helps me find new ideas. Bounce different possibilities off of each other, discuss where you want your story to go or what you know about it so far. If you don’t want to be social or go outside, sometimes you should just open up a notebook and write down everything you already know about your idea. Study that, think it over in your mind. Imagine it as a movie. Who do you see cast in it? Where do you see it going? What scenes does your mind automatically think of and want to write? Write it all down in the notebook, and you will normally find that pretty quickly you will have a well planned out story.
And that’s that! I hope this helped you and got the creative gears in your mind grinding. If you have any suggestions or questions that you want me to answer, feel free to comment them down below. Until next time, keep writing!
